This June, over 1,100 customers joined our 2024 Clinical Informatics Symposium to share strategies for improving processes, quality, and patient outcomes.
MEDITECH Associate Vice President Janet Desroche kicked off the first day, highlighting how MEDITECH customers could optimize their Expanse EHR to maximize their investment. Strategies included aligning organizational goals with high-value targets, such as optimizing provider usage, implementing tools to tackle hospital-acquired conditions, improving MACRA/MIPS performance, leveraging advanced analytics, and addressing population health.
On Day Two, MEDITECH Senior Director of Interoperability Mike Cordeiro highlighted what is needed to achieve intelligent interoperability including an open, modern infrastructure that is cloud-based, mobile native, forward-looking, and meets industry standards to ensure meaningful data exchange. He also highlighted the ROI behind interoperability investments, which includes improved data usability, greater flexibility and control, better trending and insights, and an accelerated transition to digital health-including artificial intelligence.
Over 40 MEDITECH staff and customers presented throughout the symposium, covering such topics as nurse personalization, precision medicine, patient engagement, analytics, and optimization of physician workflows. Just a few of the customer presentations included the following:
Randy Brandt, PA-C, Mile Bluff Medical Center, described the rural Wisconsin health center's implementation of Expanse search and summarization powered by Google, and the resulting improvements in provider and patient satisfaction. Randy also spoke about the quick rollout of the new solution -- with nearly 90 percent of users onboarding within three days -- and the tangible benefits that it delivered for clinicians, specialists, and administrative staff.
Kristen Vaughan, Manager, Information Systems & Informatics and Diana Vezina RN, Clinical Nurse Educator from North Bay Regional Health Centre shared their organization’s strategy and approach to implementing Expanse Ambulatory in Canada. NBRHC is a member of ONE Health Information Technology Services (ONE HITS), which has implemented the Expanse platform across its 23-member hospitals located in Northeastern Ontario. As platform integration continued to roll out across the region's 700+ clinics, careful planning, and a well-thought-out strategy resulted in several of NBRHC’s remaining 60 clinics returning to regular operations within 11 days after go-live. Some select clinics returned to pre go-live volumes within 7 business days.
Christine Yocum, Manager of Clinical Informatics and Education, and Jonelle Depp, RN, BSN, Clinical Analyst II from The Surgical Hospital at Southwoods provided an in-depth walkthrough of their integrated workflow starting from the ambulatory setting and carrying through the whole surgical lifecycle into surgery. Southwoods is the only hospital in its tri-county area to be awarded a 5-star excellent quality and patient satisfaction rating from CMS. Their session focused on how they’ve optimized clinical documentation and pre-op orders in Expanse to prevent redundant actions, ensure compliance, and streamline the process for all users involved.
Misty Hatcher, CMA from Hancock Health spoke about her facility's benefits since implementing Expanse Patient Connect, including increased patient satisfaction, improved staff efficiency, and a 35% decrease in no-show rates. Additionally, Hancock Health used targeted messaging campaigns for their patients who were due or overdue for mammography exams, which resulted in over 1,000 new screening appointments scheduled.
Tracy McCauley, RN, BCN, MS, OCN, Senior Ambulatory Analyst at Frederick Health explained how her organization uses MEDITECH Expanse to match patients with relevant clinical trials — both those taking place at Frederick and at other organizations nationwide. She described how they leverage Patient Registries to pull discrete genomic data from Expanse Genomics; how they automatically match and enroll patients in relevant clinical trials based on that data (using MEDITECH’s integration with GenomOncology); how they use Expanse Care Compass to coordinate and prioritize care activities and patient outreach; how they manage the complexities of billing for patients in clinical trials; and how they use Expanse to accommodate the challenging reporting requirements for conducting clinical trials.
