Founder and Executive Director, Design Institute for Health; Professor, Department of Medical Education, The University of Texas at AustinStacey Chang serves as the executive director of the Design Institute for Health, a collaboration between the Dell Medical School and the College of Fine Arts at The University of Texas at Austin. It is a first-of-its-kind institution, dedicated to applying design approaches to solving systemic health care challenges as an integrated part of a medical education and training program.
Working with invested stakeholders in the healthcare ecosystem and harnessing the resources of the university, the Design Institute is focused on creating human-centered solutions in every area of the patient and provider experience — all with a focus on improving people’s health outcomes and health care experiences.
Until 2014, Mr. Chang served as the managing director of the health care practice at IDEO, a global design and innovation firm, where his clientele included governments, research institutions, hospitals, and companies involved in pharma, insurance, and medical technology.
He served on the editorial advisory board and as a stage host for TEDMED, and is currently a Thought Leader for NEJM Catalyst.

Mark G. Shrime, MD, MPH, PhD, FACS
Founder and Director of Harvard's Center for Global Surgery Evaluation; Visiting Research Scholar, Princeton UniversityMark G. Shrime, MD, MPH, PhD, FACS, is the founder and director of the Center for Global Surgery Evaluation at the Massachusetts Eye and Ear Infirmary, an assistant professor of Otolaryngology, as well as Global Health and Social Medicine at Harvard Medical School. He is also a visiting research scholar at Princeton University’s Center for Health and Wellbeing.
Dr. Shrime is the author of seminal papers on the global burden of surgical disease, the financial burden facing surgical patients, and the number of people who cannot access safe surgery worldwide. He served as a co-author on the Lancet Commission on Global Surgery.
His academic pursuits focus on surgical delivery in low- and middle-income countries, where he has a specific interest in the intersection of health and impoverishment. Dr. Shrime’s work aims to determine optimal policies and platforms for surgical delivery that maximize health benefits while simultaneously minimizing the risk of financial catastrophe faced by patients. In 2018, he was awarded the Arnold P. Gold Humanism in Medicine Award by the American Academy of Otolaryngology-Head and Neck Surgery.
To date, he has worked and taught in Liberia, Sierra Leone, Guinea, Benin, Togo, Congo, Haiti, Saudi Arabia, Cameroon, and Madagascar. In May 2011, he graduated with an MPH in global health from the Harvard School of Public Health (HSPH), where he was a finalist for both the Albert Schweitzer and HSPH Student Recognition awards, and in May 2015, he received his PhD in health policy from Harvard University, with a concentration in decision science.
He is an avid photographer and rock climber and has competed on Seasons 8, 9, and 11 of American Ninja Warrior.
