Since its launch a year ago, Traverse Exchange Canada has achieved several milestones including connecting to 43 MEDITECH hospitals, 300+ long-term care sites using PointClickCare, and various provincial assets (e.g., OLIS, PCR). The solution also connects all 60 Oracle EHR customers in Ontario via the Oracle eHub and recently established its first connection to Epic hospitals. These achievements as well as future plans for the network were the focus of a recent Canadian Healthcare Technology article.
Southlake Health Chief Information Officer Sam Fielding was interviewed for the article and shared that clinicians starting to use Traverse Exchange Canada see “a massive amount of potential in it.”
To date, most of the use has been between the hospital and surrounding nursing homes, most of which use PointClickCare as their EHR system.
“It wouldn’t be possible without Traverse Exchange Canada,” said Fielding. “Traverse Exchange is the critical infrastructure that sits in the middle. It’s the hub of the data exchange.”
MEDITECH Senior Director of Interoperability Market Product Strategy Mike Cordeiro explained the network has been built with FHIR technology to enable interoperability as well as usability.
“You don’t want to simply give (providers) 30 pages of patient data. You want to provide them with answers to their questions,” Cordeiro said. “By using FHIR, the system is much more searchable.”
The article also highlights MEDITECH’s future plans for Traverse Exchange Canada, including exploring adding new data sources and expansion to new regions.
