Canadian Healthcare Technology highlights MEDITECH customers for advancing precision medicine

Canadian and U.S. organizations are leveraging Expanse Genomics for personalized care

Ontario Shores Centre for Mental Health Sciences and Frederick Health are leading the way in integrating genomic data into their MEDITECH Expanse EHRs, as highlighted in Canadian Healthcare Technology. The article shares an overview of the presentation the two organizations delivered at the HIMSS annual conference, outlining their precision medicine programs and how their implementation of Expanse Genomics has supported their initiatives.

Ontario Shores, the first organization in Canada to implement Expanse Genomics, uses the solution to guide medication dosing and treatment decisions for its mental health patients.

“Before, there was a lot of trial and error,” said Sanaz Riahi, PhD, Vice President, Clinical Services, Practice and Chief Nursing Executive at Ontario Shores. “Now, dosing is more precise.”

An early adopter of Expanse Genomics in the U.S., Frederick Health has leveraged Expanse Genomics to extend its precision medicine program. One way the hospital has achieved this is to log the availability of clinical trials within Expanse Genomics to automatically match patients based on their genetic data. The result was an almost immediate increase in clinical trial referrals.

“Before, we had to manually go through the charts looking for genetic markers and match them to the right trials,” said Jackie Rice, Vice President and CIO at Frederick Health. “Now it’s automated,” making the process much easier.

Frederick Health is also using Expanse Genomics to enable more informed clinical decisions and to streamline its pharmacogenomics processes.
