Bon Secours Health System’s new Limerick hospital spotlighted in The Irish Times

The state-of-the-art facility is implementing MEDITECH Expanse as its digital foundation

Bon Secours Health System’s new state-of-the-art 170-bed hospital in Limerick and its MEDITECH Expanse rollout were highlighted in The Irish Times. The article details the €300 million project’s key features, including private single-patient rooms, six operating theatres, and a comprehensive diagnostic imaging suite – underscoring Bon Secours’ commitment to delivering world-class care to Ireland.

A key part of the new facility and the organisation’s strategic plan is the implementation of MEDITECH Expanse, which is being implemented across all of Bon Secours hospitals in Ireland to establish a single, integrated patient record.

“It’s about harnessing the capability of new technology to improve patient experience and care,” said Bon Secours Health System Chief Strategy Officer Lynn Guthrie.

The health system, which is Ireland’s largest independent hospital group, is implementing the cloud-hosted model of the EHR at all five of its hospitals, replacing the current combination of legacy systems and paper documentation. Expanse will provide continuity of care between facilities, enhance patient experience, and ultimately enable better outcomes.

“People are certainly very excited about it, and they’ve bought into the vision of a digital future,” Guthrie said. “Their mindsets are shifting around moving from paper and doing things manually to electronically – that’s a big change.”

The new Bon Secours hospital will also bring 300 new jobs to Limerick, doubling the current staff count and expanding access to high-quality, patient-centered services. The facility is designed to meet growing regional healthcare demands while setting new standards in hospital infrastructure and sustainability.
