The Aga Khan Health Service, Tanzania (AKHS, T) has gone live with MEDITECH Expanse across its network, including Aga Khan Hospital, Dar es Salaam, Mwanza, and four Outreach Health Centres, with plans for 15 additional centres nationwide. Serving more than one million patients each year, the integrated health system’s Expanse Electronic Health Record (EHR) rollout marks a significant milestone in its digital transformation efforts to deliver safer, more connected patient-centric care.
Expanse provides Aga Khan Health Services, Tanzania, with a single secure patient record that is updated in real-time and shared between care settings. This allows clinicians to have a comprehensive view of a patient’s health history, eliminating unnecessary duplication of tests and enhancing the patient experience. Additionally, integrated clinical decision support ensures that clinicians have access to the vital information, helping them to deliver the best patient outcomes.
“This unified system highlights our dedication to delivering healthcare of the highest standard and embodies the AKDN One Health approach,” said Dr. Zeenat Sulaiman Khan, Regional Chief Executive Officer, Aga Khan Health Services, East Africa.
The Expanse deployment at Aga Khan Hospital, Dar es Salaam, Mwanza, and its 19 clinics aligns with the Aga Khan Development Network’s (AKDN) One Health Initiative and follows the Expanse implementation at Aga Khan University Hospital, Nairobi. The One Health Initiative also includes the rollout of Expanse at Aga Khan University Hospital, Karachi, (Pakistan), and Aga Khan Hospitals in Kisumu and Mombasa, (Kenya).
“This initiative demonstrates our ongoing commitment to providing patient-centred, high-quality care and showcases how private–public collaboration can help advance the national goal of accessible and affordable health services,” said Sisawo Konteh, Chief Executive Officer, Aga Khan Health Service, Tanzania.
As part of the EHR rollout, Aga Khan Health Services, Tanzania, introduced a new secure patient portal to improve patient engagement and empower patients to take a more active role in their care. The portal allows patients to easily access their health information, view test results, and schedule appointments at their convenience.
“We are delighted to partner with Aga Khan Health Services on their digital transformation journey," said the CEO of MEDITECH International Services, Charlotte Jackson. "By providing clinicians with real-time access to accurate data and empowering patients to take an active role in their health, AKHS is setting a new standard for healthcare excellence across the region.”
Aga Khan Health Services, Tanzania’s Expanse implementation also supports key government and organisational initiatives. By enabling seamless care coordination and eliminating duplication of tests, Expanse helps the health network improve efficiency and deliver better outcomes, aligning with the Government of Tanzania’s efforts to expand access to affordable, high-quality healthcare. By significantly reducing paper documentation, Expanse also contributes to the AKDN Go Green Initiative and its commitment to achieving net-zero emissions by 2030.
