Exciting new updates to Smart Pump Integration!

MEDITECH is working with an early adopter on smart pump infusion integration with BD Alaris Smart Pumps. Look for an update on its status later this year. The integration will allow smart pumps to integrate with the Expanse Medication Administration Record (MAR), the IV flowsheet, the Labor and Delivery flowsheet, and the Critical Care flowsheet. With this bidirectional integration, the smart pump will accept order data from the MEDITECH EHR, and MEDITECH will accept infusion data (such as IV intake, rate, start time, and stop time) from the Smart Pump.

Smart pump integration will improve workflow for nurses, reduce redundant documentation, and improve accuracy in IV documentation/administration. In addition, the ability to capture the precise start and stop time of infusions from the pump will assist in billing and revenue accuracy.

Benefits

  • Improve patient safety by increasing accuracy in smart pump programming and  MAR documentation, including the accuracy of infusion intake,  by reducing manual pump programming.
  • Improve efficiency (by reducing clicks) and enhance the quality of patient care.
  • Reduce redundant documentation.
  • Incorporate outbound integration: Smart pump devices can accept prepopulation of infusion-specific data from MEDITECH.
  • Incorporate inbound integration: Smart pump devices send infusion status data back to MEDITECH.

Features

  • Bidirectional (closed loop) integration: MEDITECH Expanse to the smart pump, and the smart pump back to MEDITECH
    • Outbound messages to the smart pump
      • The PCS application will send infusion order data electronically to the pump.
    • Inbound messages from the smart pump
      • The smart pump will send messages as either an event (such as start, stop, pause, etc.) or as periodic (status every 5 minutes, capturing IV intake, etc.).
      • Precisely capture start and stop times on infusions, in turn improving the accuracy of billing and revenue.
  • Barcode scanning capability of pump channels
  • Ability to identify individual smart pump devices and channel modules within PCS
  • Validation that pump information matches the MEDITECH Rx Order
  • Population of primary and secondary infusion pump data onto the MAR, IV flowsheet, Labor and Delivery flowsheet, and Critical Care flowsheet
  • Accommodation of continuous and intermittent infusions
  • EDM/ONC/SUR/PCS/CC/L&D/Expanse Patient Care will have access to smart pump functionality
  • Point of Care (POC) support to initiate IV smart pump and IV documentation

Planning ahead

Here are the customer requirements and third-party requirements for the new BD Alaris integration, currently in early adoption.

Customer requirements:

  • Expanse 2.2.52, 2.1.64  (2.2.52/2.1.64 if not targeting POC workflow/functionality)
  • Live with POC (if targeting POC for this workflow)
  • Live with or implementing Expanse Patient Care, BMV, MAR, and IV Flowsheet
  • Wireless network
  • Hardware evaluation
  • The Smart Pump Infusion Integration must go live house-wide. A staggered rollout is NOT possible due to the pump transferring with the patient.**
  • A nursing staff member to assist in pre- and post-live metrics

Third-party requirements: BD Alaris System

Remediation requirements

Customers must be remediated or scheduled to remediate in the next six months to BD Alaris System v12.3, including BD Alaris Guardrails Suite Software and server applications.

Interoperability connectivity requirements

Customers must be willing to purchase BD Alaris interoperability license CCE v1.7.3 to enable Alaris system connectivity to a third-party hospital system and an integrated solutions management support service.

Keep patients safe while nurses are on the move: Smart pump workflows embedded into MEDITECH’s Point of Care functionality

MEDITECH’s Expanse Point of Care solution empowers nurses and other clinicians to engage patients while managing their workload using convenient and intuitive smartphones or handheld mobile devices. MEDITECH recently added smart pump infusion integration, enabling nurses to use the point-of-care devices in their pockets to scan patients’ wristbands, medications, and IV smart pump barcodes to send medication order details to the pump. Nurses can start pumps and then save off on the point of care devices. Throughout their shifts, nurses can continue to capture infusion data from smart pumps, improving mobility and efficiency by reducing trips between workstations and pumps. This integration is available for the Baxter Spectrum IQ Large Volume pumps, with early adoption underway for BD Alaris and planned evaluations for ICU Medical and B Braun pumps.
