Blood Bank Add-On Order Integration: Hold Unit Scenarios

Does your organization allow multiple blood products to be ordered at once with the intention of keeping some units on hold in the blood bank, proactively securing available units for a patient? This workflow can be confusing for the nurse, who sees multiple units in a READY status in the Transfusion Administration Record (TAR) based on the completed screening in Blood Bank (BBK).

The setup outlined in the Blood Bank Add-On Order Integration Guide highlights a method that may mitigate these challenges. Using required custom queries, additional order details such as the total number of units ordered and the number of units to transfuse now are available within the order detail of the TAR for the nurse’s reference. Additional patient care orders should be placed, which will flow to the worklist with these same details dictating how many units to transfuse at the time of the product order and when the held units should be transfused. Edits within BBK can also be used to push label comments that display with the unit in the TAR, further explaining which units are being held.

Follow the integration guide to ensure nurses have the most information possible when multiple units are ordered simultaneously.
