St. Luke's smart pump infusion integration

St. Luke’s Health System implements MEDITECH’s Smart Pump Infusion Integration

St. Luke’s Health System (Duluth, MN) recently implemented MEDITECH’s Smart Pump Infusion Integration with its Baxter Spectrum IQ infusion system, positively impacting staff efficiency and patient safety.

Moving to Expanse enabled St. Luke’s Health System (Duluth, MN) to implement MEDITECH’s Smart Pump Infusion Integration with its Baxter Spectrum IQ infusion system in November 2022. The effort has received overwhelming organizational support, positively impacting staff efficiency and patient safety.

MEDITECH’s Smart Pump Infusion Integration enables organizations to verify the correct patients, medications, and smart pump devices for infusions via barcode scanning while supporting accurate and timely infusion documentation. This interoperability securely sends MEDITECH order data to Baxter’s smart pump devices and infusion status data from the smart pump devices back to Expanse.

“Above all, we are committed to putting patients first,” said Manager of Clinical Informatics Kristen Fish, RN, from St Luke’s, “The smart pump infusion integration helps us make strides in the accuracy and efficiency of our nurses, which improves patient safety and gives them more time to spend with the patient at their bedside.”

Improving accuracy and increasing efficiency

St. Luke’s consists of two hospitals and more than 40 clinics, including an infusion therapy clinic – where the integration’s impact has been greatest. Nurses frequently program the Baxter smart pumps, which has reinforced the process. By capturing the data in Expanse via the interface, nurses have improved accuracy and increased efficiency.

Watching the nurses train on the new workflow and use the integration expanded opportunities for St. Luke's implementation team to help clinicians by refining processes.

“Implementing new technologies like smart pump infusion integration has the added benefit of spending time on workflows,” said Informatics Pharmacist Soyang Ha, PharmD, from St. Luke’s. “Although we already had high levels of safety and efficiency, the implementation enabled us to evaluate each step and improve our workflows even further.”

In addition to the Baxter Spectrum IQ Infusion System, MEDITECH plans to interface with other smart pump infusion systems, including those from other manufacturers, in the future.
