Alder Hey wins two prestigious HSJ Awards for healthcare service excellence

Congratulations to Alder Hey Children’s NHS Foundation Trust on recently winning two prestigious HSJ awards.

Congratulations to Alder Hey Children’s NHS Foundation Trust on recently winning two prestigious HSJ awards.

The HSJ Awards are among the most respected UK accolades given to recognise healthcare service excellence. The awards ceremony itself serves as a highly regarded and much-deserved thank you to the healthcare sector.

At this year’s virtual event, Alder Hey was recognised with the Digitising Patient Services Initiative and Staff Engagement awards, respectively.

Alder Hey’s commitment as a Global Digital Exemplar (GDE), along with their HIMSS Stage 6 achievement, were key factors in the judges’ decision to honour the Trust with the Digitising Patient Services Initiative Award. As the only specialty children’s NHS Trust selected as a GDE in 2017, the hospital continues to lead by example in its use of digital technology to transform patient care.

Alder Hey also won the Staff Engagement Award for its campaign, Flourishing in Adversity: a showcase of staff engagement at the individual, departmental, divisional, and Trust level in and around times of crisis.

According to Alder Hey’s press release: “Our ambition for staff engagement at Alder Hey was to implement organic ideas for all staff to thrive and heal. Our core Trust values of openness and togetherness underpin our compassionate initiatives that, through involvement, put staff stories at their heart. These include our new Staff Advice and Liaison Service (SALS), online Team Time storytelling, Ground TRUTH feedback tools, and our in-house Strong Foundations leadership programme.

“Staff feedback, actions, and outcomes indicate the value of these initiatives. Through internal growth, we’ve had external reach that has spread regionally and nationally.”

Mike Hooton, Technical Executive at MEDITECH UK, notes that this recognition is particularly noteworthy coming after a year like 2020.

“The pandemic is taking a toll on everyone, especially frontline healthcare staff. It’s no surprise that Alder Hey developed innovative strategies around caring for those who are shouldering so much of the stress during this public health crisis,” he says. “On top of all that, Alder Hey’s unwavering dedication to digital excellence demonstrates how committed they are to transforming care delivery for children and their families.”

As one of the most digitally sophisticated children’s hospitals within the NHS, Alder Hey is currently implementing MEDITECH Expanse, as part of their Digital Futures Strategy.
