A recent article in The Irish Times examined how Ireland’s private hospitals are accelerating the country’s digital transformation, including UPMC Ireland, which is implementing MEDITECH Expanse across its hospitals, cancer centres, and sports medicine clinics.
UPMC Managing Director Eamonn Fitzgerald shared that a modern, integrated EHR is essential for enabling more connected and informed care, seamless transitions between settings, and supporting its mission of delivering “life-changing medicine” within local communities.
“We have a significant network of healthcare provision, which requires us to have an integrated electronic health record solution in order to be able to provide always-on access to patient records, clinical workflows, and the ability to measure and monitor quality of care. The MEDITECH Expanse platform gives us the benefit of doing that.”
MEDITECH Executive Director, International, Gina Kerley, shared MEDITECH’s long history in Ireland and how the company’s technology has continually innovated to encompass the latest advancements and capabilities.
“We’ve fundamentally moved the EHR from a departmental record to an integrated, patient-centric platform where all care revolves around the individual,” Kerley said. “As healthcare continues its rapid transformation — driven by factors like AI and interoperability — our primary objective is ensuring our products remain agile, future-proofed, and always aligned with the evolving needs of today’s health systems.”
In addition to UPMC Ireland, nearly 80% of private hospitals in Ireland now use or are implementing MEDITECH Expanse, including Bon Secours, Blackrock Health, and the Mater Private Network.
