Mater Private Network highlights the impact of EHRs on patient safety and care delivery in the Irish Independent

Article details MEDITECH’s history of enabling digital transformation in Ireland

Mater Private Network and MEDITECH were recently featured in the Irish Independent as part of an in-depth look at Ireland’s accelerating push toward digitisation and the role electronic health records (EHRs) play in supporting safer, more connected, community-focused care.

The article explores how Ireland’s Digital Health Strategy is laying the foundation for interoperable, people-centred healthcare by reducing fragmented records and enabling seamless data sharing across acute hospitals, primary care, and community services. Drawing on MEDITECH’s more than two decades of experience supporting Irish healthcare organisations, the piece highlights the importance of a single longitudinal patient record as the backbone of this digital transformation.

Mater Private Network is featured as a leading example of EHR adoption in practice. In 2024, the organisation implemented MEDITECH Expanse across its 12 locations, following extensive preparation and training for approximately 2,500 staff. According to Chief Operating Officer Nikki Kane, the benefits are already clear: “From a patient point of view, it has definitely improved safety, because you have all the information there when it’s needed.”

Kane said implementing Expanse is just the beginning of their digital journey, “In terms of what we can do with that data from a patient-experience perspective, that can ultimately transform healthcare.”
