Thibodaux Regional Earns PSQH Innovator Award By Transforming Orthopedic Care with MEDITECH
Longtime MEDITECH customer also reduced complication rates and patient length of stay, while saving more than $800,000 over two years.
For their quality improvement efforts in orthopedic care, MEDITECH customer Thibodaux Regional Medical Center (Thibodaux, LA) recently earned the distinction of ‘top innovator’ in the first annual Patient Safety & Quality Healthcare (PSQH) Innovation Awards.
By leveraging MEDITECH’s EHR and the hospital analytics application, Thibodaux’s care team gained access to patient data in real-time and immediately saw the impact of their work via metric-driven results, increasing stakeholder buy-in and resources for continued advancements.
Results leading to higher levels of patient satisfaction include:
$815,103 in cost savings, achieved in less than two years
76.5% relative reduction in the complication rate for total hip and knee replacements
38.5% relative reduction in LOS for patients with total hip replacements
23.3% relative reduction in LOS for patients with total knee replacements, due to improved patient education, early mobilization, and decreased use of opioids
To achieve these outcomes, Thibodaux placed priority on the Institute for Healthcare Improvement’s (IHI) Triple Aim framework, which focuses on improving quality of care, reducing care costs, and offering a positive patient experience.
Past experience showed that following Triple Aim standards, using data-driven processes, and providing physicians with the tools to engage staff across multiple departments, Thibodeaux could transform orthopedic care.
In their work to address areas of need, such as ensuring that all patients were medically cleared for surgery prior to their procedures, Thibodaux’s Care Transformation Steering Team created a Care Transformation Orthopedic Team, who had the responsibility of evaluating new ways to improve safety, reduce complication rates, and strengthen patient education.
Thibodaux Regional plans to continue their efforts in following IHI’s Triple Aim, utilizing MEDITECH to maintain efficiency, transform care, and achieve meaningful results for their patients.
