Prevent Medication Administration Errors with MEDITECH’s Integrated BV

MEDITECH’s integrated Bedside Verification enables clinicians to seamlessly incorporate barcode-assisted medication administrations into the patient care workflow.

Accurate medication administration is one of the foundations of safe care, but clinical workarounds can increase the risk of error and put the patient’s health in jeopardy.

A study published in the Journal of the American Medical Informatics Association found that workarounds occurred in 63 percent of the 5,793 barcode-assisted medication administrations (BCMA) reviewed. Of the errors resulting from workarounds, 78 percent were omissions — meaning patients did not get the medications they needed when they needed them.

The study also found that workarounds resulted in a 8.2 percent average error rate, while for administrations that did not use workarounds, the error rate was just 0.7 percent.

MEDITECH’s integrated Bedside Verification (BV) enables clinicians to seamlessly incorporate BCMA into the patient care workflow, and our recommended best practices can help you to avoid workarounds and reduce the risk for medication errors, improving patient safety.

Clinical decision support is also integrated into the MEDITECH Medication Administration Record (MAR) solution, with PRN (as-needed) warnings, dose verification, and cumulative dosing alerts all part of the workflow.

MEDITECH also provides administrative review of MAR activity through monitoring reports and pharmacy prescription auditing, ensuring that providers maintain BCMA compliance, avoid workarounds, and reduce errors.
