November is Home Care and Hospice Month

Healthcare and government leaders recognize the month of November as Home Care and Hospice month — a time dedicated to celebrate the millions of nurses, home care aides, therapists, and social workers who are making a difference in the lives of patients and their families.

“It is highly appropriate in November that we celebrate the nurses, therapists, aides, and other providers who choose to use their lives to serve our country’s aged, disabled, and dying,” Val J. Halamandaris, National Association for Home Care and Hospice (NAHC) President said in an NAHC announcement. “No work is nobler, and no group is more deserving of our respect and admiration.”

According to NAHC, the first of the 78 million baby boomers turned 65 last year, and the rest of the boomers will do so in the next two decades, further driving the shift from hospitals and nursing homes to home care, and from treatment to proactive monitoring and care.

Further acknowledging the growing demand for home care, the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) is offering a variety of publications to help educate Medicare providers on coverage and payment for hospice and home health services.
