MEDITECH Showcases Interoperability and Collaboration during HIMSS19
MEDITECH took the opportunity at HIMSS19 to demonstrate how the Expanse EHR is supporting the goals of “frictionless” care delivery.
Interoperability was one of the hot topics at HIMSS19 this year, and MEDITECH took the opportunity at our industry’s largest trade show to demonstrate how the Expanse EHR is supporting the goals of “frictionless” care delivery.
The annual HIMSS Interoperability Showcase highlighted collaborative innovation, including bringing different systems together to connect information from various sources and care settings. To highlight interoperability’s impact on patients, MEDITECH participated in a use case demonstration with CommonWell Health AllianceⓇ, focused on new features for nationwide care coordination and provider notifications.
As one of seven participating EHR vendors in the demonstration, MEDITECH showed one patient’s care journey that included treatment of hypertension and stroke. In the scenario, MEDITECH’s role was that of the community hospital emergency department, where the patient was seen for stroke symptoms. Within the MEDITECH EHR, physicians could easily find patient information from other healthcare organizations embedded within their own workflow.
Features such as MEDITECH’s style sheet enabled physicians to use single point navigation to jump to areas of interest such as allergies, medications, and problem lists — in order to see the full patient story. Having this information at their fingertips facilitated more informed decision-making and faster stabilization of the patient. As part of the care transitions, a provider event notification was sent to the patient’s primary care provider (PCP), informing them of the patient’s condition and progress, so that proactive follow-up could take place at a later date.
“Interoperability isn’t just about documents and interfaces,” says MEDITECH Marketing Solution Manager Stephen Valutkevich. “It’s really about people, that’s the important part — and how we can simplify healthcare to make consumers’ lives better. That happens when a patient’s information follows them, no matter where they go to receive care.”
In a separate interactive session, MEDITECH also led a discussion about Greenfield, our open app development environment supported by industry-standard RESTful APIs, including FHIR.
Together with early adopter Forward Advantage, MEDITECH development leaders showed how Greenfield improves the ways providers, patients, and consumers can see and use healthcare information. MEDITECH customers and third-party developers are encouraged to leverage APIs for app development tailored to their patient and consumer populations, so it will help drive self care and other proactive health initiatives.
“MEDITECH believes APIs play a vital role in fueling innovation and laying the groundwork for better healthcare,” says Christopher Kundra, interoperability development manager at MEDITECH.
“Through app development platforms, EHR vendors can add value to their systems by sharing resources to support overall community growth, and encouraging innovation from outside sources. Greenfield has been designed for collaboration, opening the door to the community for exploration and access to our EHR to drive innovation.”
