MEDITECH EHR Data Powers New Humber River Command Centre

Real-time data from the MEDITECH EHR serves as the backbone for the 4,500-sq.-ft. Humber River Command Centre, one of only two such facilities in the world.

Longtime MEDITECH customer Humber River Hospital (Toronto, Ontario) recently opened its new Command Centre, the first of its kind in Canada and only the second such facility in the world.

“MEDITECH was honored to be onsite at the Command Centre opening — during the tour, you had the sense you were looking at the future of healthcare informatics,” explains MEDITECH AVP Joseph Coughlin. “Realizing that MEDITECH helped play a part by integrating our data to the command centre analytics gave us a great sense of pride.”

Real-time data from the MEDITECH EHR serves as the backbone for the 4,500-sq.-ft. centre, providing continuous read-outs that alert staff to scenarios like delayed patient care, unbalanced provider workload, and events that may result in patient harm.

The command centre [click to play YouTube video] is also staffed by medical professionals with the authority to act on information displayed on its 26-panel GE Wall of Analytics, including live video feeds from the emergency department and other areas in the hospital.

“Our vision was to build a highly sophisticated digital command centre, using real-time Artificial Intelligence to drive positive patient-centered outcomes, resulting in a highly reliable hospital,” says Kevin Fernandes, chief technical officer at Humber River.

“MEDITECH was instrumental in working with our technology team to successfully integrate more than 15 directly connected interfaces, which enables patient data to be transmitted in real time. Today, we’re providing better coordinated care and enabling clinicians to use all of their resources to make more informed decisions.”

A MEDITECH customer for 26 years, Humber River has already established highly efficient clinical and diagnostic systems, including the use of robots to mix and deliver medications, as well as machines that process blood automatically and enter results into the patient’s medical record.

It is widely known as North America’s first digital-only hospital, serving more than 850,000 people in the northwest greater Toronto area with one of the busiest Emergency Departments in Canada.
