Cuero Health Awarded the Leadership Culture Award by TORCH

The organization’s Senior Leadership Team was recognized for outstanding innovation and teamwork at TORCH’s annual Fall conference.


This past September, staff members at Cuero Health (Cuero, TX) were awarded the Leadership Culture Award by the Texas Organization of Rural & Community Hospitals (TORCH). TORCH advocates for rural and community hospitals throughout the state and provides leadership in addressing the unique needs of the staff, hospitals, and patients they serve.

Given to Cuero’s Senior Leadership Team consisting of Lynn Falcone, CEO; Alma Alexander, CFO; Judy Krupala, CNO; Denise McMahan, Assistant Administrator; and Greg Pritchett, Clinic Administrator, the award recognizes leadership in overcoming significant challenges through teamwork, innovation, stewardship, and exceptional performance. 

Falcone expressed her pride in the team’s win: “As an organization, we do not accept the status quo. We want the best for Cuero Health, including staff, patients and the communities we serve and it shows in our passion and drive.”

Beginning in 2016, Cuero aligned with San Antonio’s Methodist Healthcare System and set forth on a renewed mission of excellent patient service, as well as improved operations. The organization instituted staff meetings, as well as one-on-one sit-downs with every employee to discuss change and the issues they feel are critical to success. The Senior Leadership Team also began weekly night and weekend shift rounds to gain insight into their staff’s unique perspective, log issues, and provide follow-up. 

By the spring of 2018, Cuero staff had approved a new mission statement with a promise to serve patients compassionately. They established an accredited stroke program, as well as telecardiology that gives patients a convenient alternative to hospital transfers. Currently, the organization is developing a telepsych clinic to address the community’s need for better mental health care and resources. 

With these new initiatives, the hospital has seen significant gains in outreach and engagement - both internally and throughout the region. Staff engagement rose from 67 percent to 80 percent, placing Cuero in the top quarter across all HCA hospitals and in the top four of Methodist Healthcare and its affiliates.
