Alberta Health Services Deploys MEDITECH Throughout Five Public Health Zones

Alberta Health Services (AHS) recently completed replacement of its Edmonton public health system with a provincial MEDITECH solution in the Edmonton Zone. This is one of the last legs of the provincial project that will bring together all five AHS zones’ public health systems to a single MEDITECH solution.
Having a single, contemporary IT solution will enable the public health systems to improve patient safety, streamline a consistent workflow, and realize process efficiencies, as well as provincially consolidate reporting processes.
“The partnership we have with MEDITECH was evident every day. We worked arm-in-arm and functioned as a single collaborative team with the clinical business.” says Michael Cleghorn, Executive Director of IT Rural Clinical Services at AHS. “We’re proud of the success we share in this and continue to value the ongoing relationship between AHS and MEDITECH.”
Dubbed the Edmonton Zone Project, staff from AHS and MEDITECH worked together to execute a strategy for updating their systems. As part of the project scope, more than 1.3 million patient records and 11 million immunizations records were converted into electronic files since the project’s launch last December, according to an article in Canadian Healthcare Technology.
The project’s success was topped off by the Project Management Institute Northern Alberta Chapter (PMINAC), who awarded the team with the 2018 Information Management & Technology Project of the Year and the 2018 PMINAC Overall Project of the Year. These awards recognize the team’s excellence in project management, superior organizational results, and their positive impact on society.
“We’re proud of the collaborative teamwork that’s taking place to bring this important project to fruition,” says MEDITECH Executive Vice President Helen Waters. “Providing a provincial public health solution will improve patient safety by being able to share one, real-time source of information throughout the communities AHS serves.”
AHS is currently on its second such project with the Calgary Zone, which is expected to be completed by the end of the year.
