The Nurse’s Role in Identifying and Responding to Human Trafficking

As someone who has been personally impacted by human trafficking, Jeri Moomaw knows first-hand the toll it can take on individuals and their communities. She has made it her mission to assist survivors on their healing journey - which includes preparing community organizations and front-line health professionals with the necessary education and tools to respond to situations that may involve human trafficking and violence. This session aims to increase awareness of human trafficking from a public health record perspective, as well as impart strategies for clinicians to improve victim identification and support.
Jeri Moomaw is the founder and executive director for the Innovations Human Trafficking Collaborative, based in Olympia, Washington. Jeri serves as a consultant for the U.S. Department of Homeland Security Blue Campaign and is a human trafficking subject matter expert for both the U.S. Department of Justice Office for Victim of Crime and the U.S. Department of Health & Human Services Office on Trafficking in Persons. In 2016, Jeri was awarded by the U.S. Department of Justice Office of Justice Programs for her work in improving the lives of trafficking survivors.

NEWS2 is the latest version of the National Early Warning Score (NEWS), which advocates a system to standardize the assessment of, and response to, acute illness. NEWS2 has received formal endorsement from NHS England and NHS Improvement to become the early warning system for identifying acutely ill patients – including those with sepsis – in hospitals in England. Join Clatterbridge Cancer Centre as they outline how they built NEWS2 within the MEDITECH system to trigger guidance for clinical staff and warnings when scoring is high.
